What is a Doula?

There are different types of doulas, including birth doulas who focus on the labour and delivery process and postpartum doulas who provide support in the days and weeks following childbirth. Hiring a doula is a personal choice, and their role is complementary to the care provided by medical professionals, such as doctors and midwives.   A doula is a trained and supportive companion who provides non-medical assistance to individuals or couples before, during, and after childbirth. Offering emotional, physical, and informational support, doulas aim to enhance the birthing experience by empowering and comforting the expectant person and their partner. While not medical professionals, doulas play a vital role in advocating for the birthing person's preferences, providing comfort measures during labour, and offering guidance and support in the postpartum period.

Welcome!

First and foremost, I LOVE babies and I'm fascinated by birth. I am so excited to be in this wonderful birthing space. I am a mother of 4, all births were a moment of feeling deep profound self empowerment. 3  variations of natural births and 1 Caesarean Section.  I loved being pregnant and I blossomed. For me, becoming a Mother was like a superpower and I was unstoppable. But when the baby bliss began to wear off and reality kick in, I  realise now, that I should have reached out and asked for more help at times. I could have done with the reassurance from a support worker that it was OK to not be OK and that I could not do it all on my own. Being pregnant, giving birth and stepping into motherhood has been my absolute moment of knowing exactly what and who I was and fully surrendering and trusting in mother nature. But of course there were ups and downs and I did not have family nearby, and I did not have the network support around me, and because I seemed to be OK, no one asked how I was doing. I was signed off as OK from the maternity team and I was left to having to figure out a lot on my own.  Each pregnancy was very different and each one teaching me something extraordinary. I can’t fully explain it, but I just knew what I was doing but to do it all on my own was not always what I wanted or had a choice. And so from this experience it has been my mission to be able to hold the space to support others and reassure them that we don’t have to do this journey completely alone.

I trained with Continuum Doulas, which has a big focus on post-natal care and with the increased strain of not enough resources in the NHS, it is evident that there is a real need for post-natal support and that’s where the benefit of taking on a Doula comes in.

We are there to guide and support you every step of the way, in whatever capacity you need us to be.

For the past 10 years I have been supporting people from all walks of life but with a particular focus on people with special needs. I have acquired knowledge and wisdom through a more natural approach to holistic living and learning about complementary therapies by becoming a recognised and accredited practitioner through the CNHC in Reiki, Aromatherapy and certified in Swedish Massage. Along the way I discovered the gentle and supportive energy of Flower Essences which I offer to my clients. With these therapies it meant that I was able to work with people who were already under medical supervision and care and my holistic work would not contradict but enhance and support the healing process of the individual.

These gentle but effective skills are transferable and complementary to the Doula work. Massage can relieve the discomfort and physical stress the body goes through as it changes through pregnancy through to birth. Flower Essences can bring emotional support and reassurance during times of vulnerability. Reiki can help the individual feel more relaxed and accepting of the changes that are happening around them. They work synergetically together or as a stand-alone therapy..

Ultimately, I am here to offer emotional and physical support to the Woman who is going through the birthing process and

to meet their needs. Navigating through the maternity system can be overwhelming.

I can also help you go through writing your birth preferences, soothe your growing bump with massage or Reiki .

I make an excellent cup of tea, we can de-brief post birth, sign posting to relevant healthcare professionals etc.

I also have 10 years of Counselling skills behind me and so I make a good listener and sometimes this is enough.

Each birth is a different experience and therefore the list is not exhaustive, but I hope that it gives you a good indication as to what I am able to offer. If you feel my work resonate with you and have any questions and or want to get to know me better, feel free to book a call and let’s see how it unfolds from there.
